Public Art Dedication of Plexus c18

  • Tuesday, October 11, 2016 | 10AM
  • San Antonio International Airport

Featuring Gabriel Dawe

Contemporary at Blue Star is pleased to announce its Collaborative Partnership with the City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts & Culture’s (DA&C) Public Art San Antonio (PASA) division and San Antonio International Airport (SAT) to commission Plexus c18, a site-specific public art installation by Dallas-based artist Gabriel Dawe. The installation, a weaving of approximately 90 miles of colored thread hooked from wall to ceiling that emulates the dynamic shape of an airplane, will suspend from the vaulted ceiling of the Terminal A ticketing area. Plexus c18 will be composed of more than 19 colors—creating a prism-like effect that represents the full spectrum of visible light. The art installation will be on view for three years beginning October 2016.

Plexus c18 is part of the SATellites Airport Art Program and is the first major Collaborative Partnership between Contemporary at Blue Star and the DA&C. SATellites Airport Art Program provides for public art through collaborative partnerships between the City and creative non-profit organizations. Administered by PASA, the City’s public art program, these projects generate innovative, site-specific public art commissions that activate the airport’s unique architectural spaces and facilities. Support comes from public art allowances generated by the City’s public art ordinance tied to eligible airport capital improvements. By pooling resources and expertise, the SATellites program shines a light on the robust, vital cultural eco-system in San Antonio and creates new audiences for art and culture.

The SAT continues to transform into a vibrant gateway for travelers, giving residents and tourists alike a preview of the dynamic artistic and cultural landscape of San Antonio. Plexus c18 will join other public artworks from an array of artists, including Rolando Briseño, Alejandro Diaz, Bill FitzGibbons, Ann Gardner, Christopher Janney, Chuck Ramirez, Gary Sweeney and The Art Guys. Home to ten domestic and international airlines, SAT is visited by nearly 8.5 million residents and tourists each year.

The Public Dedication event will be held at the San Antonio International Airport in Terminal A, in full view of the completed installation.

Please plan on arriving 15 minutes early to account for parking and riding the shuttle to Terminal A. Parking can be validated after the event.
