Featuring Justin Boyd

Boyd’s new installation at Contemporary at Blue Star is inspired by his time spent in Germany in Summer 2014. Selected as one of the 2014-2015 Contemporary at Blue Star Berlin Residents, Boyd spent his days recording the city of Berlin through its sounds. So much of his time was dedicated to listening, whether it was to the daily sounds of bikes, cars, trains, conversations, or the Berlin Philharmonic, improvisational music, and techno, Boyd gained a unique knowledge of the city that others may not have.

On this process, Boyd states, “My ears have given me an intimate sense of what actually constitutes Berlin. What frequencies are present, which are gone? What sounds are here that are not other places, I know now that if played a recording of a street scene from Berlin, I would recognize it’s DNA very quickly. The city is loud, lots of bicycles, trains, broken bottles, many languages, protests, police sirens and a steady 4/4 beat most places you go.”

Boyd’s multimedia, sculptural installation is the distillation and processing of his field recordings and is experienced as an object, sound, and environment, creating a new sort landscape for visitors to experience in Contemporary at Blue Star’s interior and exterior spaces.
