ICE
The Icelandic Cultural Exchange (ICE) is part of Blue Star Contemporary Art Center's International Initiatives, created to reach out to artists worldwide in an ongoing effort to develop unique cultural relationships.
The ICE program began in 2007, with Icelandic sculptor Steinunn Thorarinsdóttir's Art in the Garden exhibition, through Blue Star, at the San Antonio Botanical Garden, and continued in 2010, when San Antonio sculptor Bill FitzGibbons was invited to create a site-specific light sculpture at City Hall in Reykjavík. San Antonio artist George Schroeder and Icelandic artist Guðjón Bjarnason have been selected as the next Icelandic Cultural Exchange artists.
Guðjón Bjarnason will exhibit new works in the Main Gallery at Blue Star Contemporary Art Center in June 2011. As part of his artist exchange, Bjarnason will create new steel sculptures utilizing his explosion technique. These sculptures will be on display along with a selection of Bjarnason's large-scale drawings and paintings.
In August 2012, George Schroeder will install two outdoor sculptures in Iceland. A monumental steel sculpture will be placed in Iceland Sculpture Park in the town of Stokkseyri, on the southwest coast of Iceland and another large steel sculpture will be installed in the capitol city of Reykjavík. An exhibition of concept drawings and maquettes of these sculptures will be on display at the Reykjavík Museum of Art. Schroeder's sculpture project is titled "Ferðast Inane" which translates from Icelandic to "Travelling Within". If you are interested in supporting "Travelling Within", please visit our ICE - Support page.
